good friday april 6
It was twenty years ago today that the Mute Drivers played their first live show.
Upstairs At Harry's, in Bethnal Green.
All five albums, two singles, and a bonus album are going to be made available here by the end of June.
Look out!
Twenty years ago Larry Kramer and others formed ACT-UP.
Drugs where being withheld by the Bush administration whilst people died from AIDS.
One of those drugs was plant based.
PWAs were saying "We're dying, test these drugs on us!"
Here are the words to a song I wrote about it then, which appeared on the last Mute Drivers album.
PWA
Take a little piece of you and wrap it some tissue paper
Put it in an envelope and mail it today
Send it to the president and ask him when he's gonna spend
Some money, time, and energy on people with aids
By 1991 five million Africans will be dead and gone
When will what can be done be done
Done's the right word
Been stiched up real good
They're letting us die like flies
'Cause we're not you
We are your sons and we are your daughters
All we bring is love
Don't turn your backs on us
It's no black disease
It's no gay plague
Just people with AIDS and we all need saving
Now George Bush is president I wonder if he still remembers
Talking about the giggle factor
I'd like to know
Mister Invisible, what's so funny about dying people spending their money
On drugs without chemicals?
I don't get the joke
Larry Kramer is now in his 70's, and still going strong.
He is amazing.
How many Africans have died since 1991..........

Yes, a new Raw Believer CD is out today - La Doña.
Raw wrote the words to the 10 songs immediately after returning from visiting his mother in Guatemala.
The three of us wrote and recorded them all in one 8 hour session at De La Masure, mixed them the following two days.
Oh yes, we made the video at the same time.
6 days from conception to completion.
On the 7th day we rested.

monday january 22 2007
Well, last week was a week that was.
Started with Saturday actually, when we released the first single by new band The Stragglers.
That very same day it was played on Car Talk.
We made a video for it too which you can see on youtube.
Goldfish will be appearing live with Misty Roses in March at Tank in NYC - watch this space for the date.
We will be playing a brand new set with brand new film projection.
After much frantic emailing Raw Believer are to get back together and will be heading into the studio to make the second LP any day now.
Ssssh.... it's a secret.
After all that we put on our dancing shoes, poured ourselves a cocktail or two, and boogied to the following tunes:
10) Scullery - Clifford T Ward
9) Independence Day - Comsat Angels
8) Airwaves - Thomas Dolby
7) September - Earth Wind and Fire
6) If You Got To Make a Fool of Somebody - James Ray
5) Protection - Massive Attack
4) Arthur McBride - Planxty
3) Glory Box Live - Portishead
2) Sand All Yellow - Goldfish
1) Right Said Fred - Bernard Cribbins
Oh yes, the man who produced Right Said Fred?
George Martin.

As 2007 is the twentieth anniversary of the first Mute Drivers record we are remastering all the records and releasing them here.
Plus a new record, Global Warning, which has unreleased live performances from the Rough Trade Christmas party at the Powerhaus, London, 1989, recorded with the Rak Mobile studio, mixed at Worldwide by Paul Kendall.
The record also contains some of the songs that were to be our sixth record, plus a radio interview from 1988.
Phew!

We try to make sense of our little lives by imposing order on chaos, human made and natural.
We lie to get by.

Well, the world is about to implode as we over here go to war with North Korea, Iran, oh and Iraq and all those other irritating little places.
Meanwhile on TV torture is entertainment, a propaganda blanket.
We'll pay.
The scarier it gets the more in denial we are.
Must be time for a revolution

What on earth has been going on since may 20?
First off we've just finished putting our DeLaMasure studio back together in it's new home in Equinunk PA.
The fruits are forming nicely and will be picked and presented to you around harvest festival time.
The Misty Roses ep got held up due to artwork delays, but will be released December.
Monster Zero.
Still on tour with the Yeah Yeah Yeahs.
War, floods...
Rivers of blood.

New Misty Roses single is finished and will be released on Frogmanjake in the US, Rhythm of Life in the UK.

Look out for the second Hello New York! upon it's return.
You can hear the first one right here.
What with all the moving, we had to put off finishing the new Goldfish DVD, but watch out!
It's coming soon.
Live dates to be announced.
Due to Life and Living's sabbatical, Letter From America is also taking a break, but you can read some of them here, or buy the compilation cassette from Life and Living's site.

Jen's birthday on the 17th, Kate's birthday in a couple of days, Sara's birthday too. Happy happy birthday, lovlies.
Rough news for us but not for where he's going is that Raw B himself is going to school to be a teacher . Well, if I were three today this would be very good news for me, but I'm fifty-two and have to think about where all these songs are going to go, you know, practically speaking. Any thoughts, world? Funny thing about songs, they have their own life, but you've got to give them a good start, you know, your best effort. Some you go, well, that one's best left to quietly languish in its own personal grove and others just ping off on their own like they were only waiting for you to give them voice.
But when you've got these Raw Believer songs that no one's going to care about and they're so full of life and, like Mike Mok, bless him, said, all your friends are going to go wow and then nothing. Bird Thrower, I Took the Picture.

The Christain right came out in force but that is not the whole. You first time voters didn't do the right thing, did you.

Got to keep on keeping on... chip away.... eventually it'll all fall down. Hope we live to see it.

So...
Those big guns at one remove on the box tonight. Cheney, an old pro of old, versus Edwards (Blake?), a blinking child.
Surely one of them will push their necks out of the parameters and SAY something?
Even Cheney spluttering his red white and true blue bile would do, at debate on this lower level.
Oh how I wished for a sign, a message, an indication that Sexton Blake would uncover some part of his script, hidden between the lines, and shoot off a couple a rounds.
Ah but no.
Big Dick just kept on saying what Sexy was about to.
The camera angles and lighting designed to show Cheney the man, Edwards the boy.
A playground squabble for power hour.
How many damp squibs can you fit in an election?
Dino Ciani - died in 1974. Pianist. Film exists of his extraordinary life affirming musicianship.
We just saw it.
Glad I stayed alive long enough.

Well.....
The show at USC at noon on the 3rd was predictable a week before we left New York.
We played a challenging set to a bunch of future born again Republicans.
That is why Mike Maturo (bless you) brought us out here.
Spaceland show that night we played almost brilliantly. Thank you Dane for the sound.
A day off on the 4th in LA. Did Bikram yoga class at the great tart's studio.
I had to leave after 40 minutes. The heat was SO intense. Not done it for too long. Barbara did it beautifully.
Whatever you say about Bikram Choudray those 26 postures in that 104 degree heat are magnificent.
Yesterday we drove out of LA and headed to the desert; 29 Palms, in fact, San Bernadino County.
Check out the map. Look at the size of the National Parks and the Indian Reservations in relation to the Military Bases.
Today. What a day. Drove through Joshua Tree National Park. Met a coyote on the way,
Plus a number of little scattling black and white animals,
Plus a number of diligent ants.
What a place. The desert.
What a day,
All day...
Drove back out west to La Jolla and the sea, the sea. Gold sky, pink clouds, a lavender surf on the big Pacific, at sunset.
Tomorrow Labor Day, off. Here is San Diego. The Casbah looms....
wednesday september 1
Well, here we are in LA. First show tomorrow.
Screaming kids directly behind us all the way on Jet Blue...
In a little hotel, free HBO, you know. Still, free high speed internet, free parking, free breakfast, and Six Feet Under on TV......

As the nazis prepare to strom their way into our city this coming week we are heading out west, on Wednesday, the day Hopalong hits town.
Our little tour starts in LA on Wednesday.
Show the other day at Pete's Candy Store was a a good rehearsal.....

Thousands turned out. Did you hear about it?

tour diary............with those liars
Salt Lake City 3/24/04 - Bricks
Woke early on the bus, just before heading down into the valley of Salt Lake City, strange and beautiful, with a kind of silvery light. The people, too, very graceful. Last and best show of the tour. We played and sang our hearts out. Such a pleasure to play shows with the wonderful Liars.
Just before soundcheck we looked up at the twilit sky to see the crescent Moon and Mars so close together. I thought of my niece Tessa Lucy, who lived for two days and where she may be heading now.
When we came back into the venue, Rog, who knows quite a lot about the stars, was telling us that the closeness of the Moon and Mars was significant. The first place one travels through after death.
Safe road, little one.
We both want to thank Robbie, stage manager, sound engineer, rigger, lighting engineer.
Denver 3/23/04 -- Bluebird Theatre
What a great place! An old theater, reputedly an old porn cinema, but, you know, one of those places with balconies and plaster comedy masks attached to huge seashells. We're still waiting to soundcheck at this point, so who knows how the gig will go...
...But there's a great guitar shop across the street where Laura Baxendale showed me the first guitar she refinished and her brother John fixed up my Gibson...
The gig went really well. We love playing music together.
Lawrence 3/22/04 - Day off
Spent a day off. Swam in the hotel pool, got online in a very nice internet cafe, ate some good cheap Vietnamese food, wandered around Borders book store.
Get it when you can.
Minneapolis 3/21/04 - First Avenue
Home of our friends Helen, Erik, and Hazel (see Life And Living)....
Very early all ages show, we were done, packed, and loaded by 7.30!
Barbara's guitar went out of tune right at the start so she had to reinvent her parts all the way (no gaps) which deserves an award and a big round of applause.
Liars came out in force, with Rog and heaped praise on us which made me cry and so.
Julian squeezed my bottom, so it must've been OK.
Went and had dinner at the Leaning Tower of Pizza, where Jade, Erik's son kills time/works.
(It was lovely to see you).
Chicago 3/20/04 - Logan Auditorium
Had an incredibly delicious breakfast at the Lula cafe next to the venue...one of those meals, hadn't had any dinner the night before-too nervous.
We played the best show of the tour so far, (though Barbara preferred last night for its crazy madding pool playing crowd… KT said everyone was high on E, probably true, but sparky sparkly)
Got a big applause and the crowd were with us all the way.
But hey, what the fuck. We're great. There it is.
Maya, doing merchandise, said we are rad, which is praise indeed.
There was a woman on the bus who talked about Matilda Wolftone, recited a poem: hair all greasy…can't remember the rest…it was great at the time.
Aaron is sitting up front with us trying to fix his sampler which glitched tonight. Ah, technology.
Oh yeah. I'm mixing Liars live sound......
Julian came running in and said that the door was doing that weird not locking thing so I showed him what Barbara showed me that she figured out that our driver Charlie said was amazing she figured out and I agree.
And soon the bus is about to move and we'll be rocked to sleep by it's undulation as we breathe in diesel and nicotine. Sweat dreams everyone.
Detroit 3/19/04 - Magic Stick
First show. We were absolutely terrified, so of course had an amazing time. Greg Baise, the man, said 'name this tune' and intoned what he later said was The Passions' 'Strange Affair'. We closed the bar.
Nice bus. Like a yacht someone said. Oh the sea.....and this feeling. How many people can you fit in a bunk?
